An authentic piece of turn-of-the-century American craftsmanship, this Late Victorian pressed-back rocking chair was manufactured by the historic F. Herhold & Sons Chair Company in Chicago, Illinois (circa 1895–1915).
Crafted from solid quartersawn white oak (commonly known as tiger oak), the chair showcases a striking, shimmering grain pattern across its prominent, curved backrest. The upper panel features a beautiful steam-pressed relief scrolling motif—a classic industrial design element of the era. The lower lumbar support and armrests are detailed with elegant turned spindles and anchored by wide, rolled arm terminals.
A rare feature of this specific piece is the intact, original circular orange factory label preserved on the underside of the seat, verifying it as Model No. 28.
Condition Report
Overall: Very good structural and aesthetic antique condition. The frame is tight, stable, and rocks smoothly.
Finish: The original amber finish boasts a rich, historic patina with minor, honest surface scuffs on the front edge of the seat consistent with its 110+ year age.
Note on Wear: There is a small piece of the carved wood decoration missing on the lower back lumbar rail, as shown in the detailed photographs. This is purely cosmetic and does not affect the sturdiness or comfort of the chair.
