A wonderfully unusual piece of 1950s Gillette advertising and horse-racing memorabilia, this vintage Fahrenheit thermometer was presented by Gillette to the winner of the 1955 Golden Horseshoe Award. Shaped in the form of a classic horseshoe, it combines a functional household thermometer with the distinctive equestrian theme of the award. Designed to hang on the wall, the thermometer features a traditional Fahrenheit temperature scale and remains functional, accurately displaying the current indoor temperature. The horseshoe form gives it tremendous visual appeal, making it much more than an ordinary vintage thermometer. The Gillette Golden Horseshoe awards were associated with horse racing during this period. Surviving examples from the mid-1950s include Gillette Golden Horseshoe memorabilia from 1956 and 1958, making this 1955 thermometer an especially interesting earlier example of the promotion. A completed-market reference specifically identifies a "Vintage Gillette Golden Horseshoe Award Winner, 1955 Thermometer" selling for $53.89.
